RSA - Amplifying Connections

Branding / Product Design

Brief

Given by the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), with the aim to strengthen human connections.

How can the potential of entertainment technology be amplified to help people connect with each other from the safety and comfort of their home?

Concept

New students often get homesick as they leave to study away from their homes. Nearly 70% of college students suffer from loneliness or separation anxiety, often leading to depression. Problem is, they are often too afraid to open-up about it and ask for help. So, I aimed to develop a device that would help cheer them up in this situation.

Solution

My smart speaker, AmiBot, helps students communicate with their loved ones at anytime, from anywhere, so they can feel at home. I created a smart and friendly-looking device that displays interactive facial expressions on an ecofriendly design, repurposed from baby monitors that are no longer of use as children grow older.

Product Development

My first sketches were inspired by organic and food shapes based on Picasso sculptures. However, through my research, I decided to take a more minimalistic approach.

I focused on creating simple, fun, and modern concepts. My main target audience was university or college students living away from home, often experiencing loneliness and separation anxiety.

The Friendly Amibot

Inspired by my moodboards, I decided to add human facial expressions on my device, to create a fun empathetic companion. I wanted colour choices to give more variety to the audience, using colours known to improve your mood and to reduce anxiety

Amibot, Be Connected

I developed advertising campaigns to invite customers to connect their Amibots to each other and make a circle of support.

Amibot, Wherever, Whenever

I envisaged Amibot as a portable device to use wherever you go.
